Emotional Freedom Technique

Available online throughout the UK and in person in Slaithwaite, West Yorkshire.

EFT, also known as tapping, is an evidence-based therapy that combines gentle tapping on acupressure points with focused therapeutic conversation.

It can help reduce emotional distress, process difficult experiences and create lasting change in the way you think, feel and respond to life.

Many people experience meaningful shifts in just a few sessions.

Lasting change, not just temporary relief

While many people notice benefits relatively quickly, one of the reasons I find EFT so powerful is that it doesn't simply help people feel better in the moment.

Over time, repeated experiences of approaching difficult thoughts, emotions and memories while feeling safe and regulated can help the brain develop new pathways and responses.

This ability of the brain to adapt and change is known as neuroplasticity. It means that old patterns are not fixed. With practice and support, it is possible to create more flexibility, resilience and choice in how you respond to yourself, other people and the challenges of life.

Many clients also continue to use EFT between sessions and after therapy has ended, giving them a practical tool they can draw upon whenever they need it.

What to expect

EFT is simple and clear. You don't have to learn anything, and you'll never worry whether you're doing it correctly. I will guide you through the process step by step, checking in with you and adapting the pace to suit you.

Step One: Identify the focus

You bring the issue you would like to work on. This may be a belief, emotional pattern, memory or current difficulty. Through conversation, we explore how you experience it emotionally, physically and mentally. You then rate the intensity of the feeling on a scale of 0-10.

Step Two: Guided tapping

I guide you through a sequence of tapping points on the face and upper body. You tap on yourself using your fingertips while repeating words and phrases that reflect your experience. I tap along on myself to demonstrate the sequence. There is no need to remove clothing or lie down.

Step Three: Notice what changes

After each round of tapping, we pause and notice what has shifted. The intensity may reduce, new thoughts or emotions may emerge, or your perspective on the issue may begin to change. We then rate the intensity again and decide where to focus next.

Step Four: Repeat and explore

We continue this process throughout the session, following whatever emerges. Over time, we often move beyond the presenting issue and begin working with the beliefs, memories and experiences that may be contributing to it.

Many people report feeling lighter, calmer, clearer and more able to move forward.

Why work with a counsellor that also practices EFT?

EFT is a structured, evidence-based approach. My role is to create the conditions where meaningful change can happen by helping you feel safe, supported and able to explore whatever we encounter together.

My approach is gentle, collaborative and paced with care. I will guide you through the process at a pace that feels manageable, supporting you to explore the thoughts, emotions, beliefs and experiences that may be keeping you stuck.

While EFT can be practised alone, some of the deepest and most meaningful shifts happen in the presence of another person who is fully present, attuned and listening carefully.

Feeling safe, understood and held can help us access experiences, emotions and beliefs that may otherwise remain out of reach. From there, it often becomes possible to explore them in new ways, creating space for lasting change.

As both a qualified counsellor and an accredited EFT practitioner, I integrate the structured, evidence-based approach of EFT with the depth and flexibility of psychotherapeutic counselling. This means I can support you not only through the EFT process itself, but also through whatever we encounter along the way.

Does EFT really work?

In my experience, yes, it has changed my life profoundly, and I have seen it change others.

But you don't have to take my word for it. There is a large and ever-growing body of evidence showing the effectiveness of EFT.

Studies have found EFT to be effective for a range of difficulties, including anxiety, depression, trauma, phobias, stress, insomnia and chronic pain. Research has also shown improvements in stress-related biological markers and performance.

Several meta-analyses have found EFT to produce moderate to large treatment effects, suggesting that it can create meaningful change for many people (Stapleton et al., 2022).

If you would like to explore the evidence yourself, you can visit the EFT International research database.

You can also read testimonials from previous clients further down this page.

lightened my heart in a permanent way."- AB

How many sessions do I need?

Some people come for a single session focused on a specific issue. Others choose to work together over several sessions to explore deeper patterns, beliefs or past experiences.

Many clients begin with a 90-minute session, which gives us time to understand what is going on and begin working towards meaningful change straight away.
